'Furious 7' Set For Record-Breaking Opening Weekend
The high-speed, high-octane franchise shows no signs of slowing down.
According to Variety, Furious 7 is barreling for a $115 million opening weekend, which would set a box office record for the month of April. The current box office leader for an April weekend opening is last year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million), followed by Fast Five ($86 million).
Aside from the franchise's previous success, the huge interest and anticipation for Furious 7 would be indebted to late actor Paul Walker, whose death in late 2013 sent shockwaves throughout the entertainment industry and pop culture. At an advance Los Angeles screening, series staple Vin Diesel became choked up while speaking fondly of his departed costar.
The projected opening weekend box office would also set a new personal record for the franchise by eclipsing the $97.4 million debut set by Fast & Furious 6 in 2013.
